Kansas City Fun

We spent last Saturday in Kansas City taking in the Renaissance Festival during the day and then going to a KC Royals baseball game that night. We really had a great day and we definitely got a little culture in.

Going to the Renaissance Festival was like stepping back in time 500 years. Everywhere we went there were people dressed in medieval clothing, those participating in the festival and those just visiting it. We saw a guy walking around with a black bird perched on his arm and a woman with a snake draped around her neck.
The festival runs from Labor Day weekend to Columbus Day weekend and each weekend is themed. The day we were there the theme was Scottish/Highland Games. About every hour there was a new event going on and
Ken participated in the stone throw getting first. While there we also saw knights jousting, a fire eating man, and just about every corner we turned there was some sort of entertainment going on.
After about four hours of walking around and exploring we headed to the baseball stadium.

We had a blast at the baseball game. I have to admit I'm usually ready to go about halfway through the game but this one was actually pretty exciting to watch. The Royals played the Chicago White Sox and they won which I know doesn't happen very often.
Every time the Royals scored a home run, which happened three times, they shot off fireworks which was pretty fun. When arriving at the ball park and heading up to our seats a lady who worked there asked if it was Matthew's first game. Since it was, he got a certificate from the Royals for attending his first game.

Something else that happened there that I just have to mention really showed Americans patriotism and makes me so proud to be an army wife. Before the game started there were a few players on the field warming up and people in the stadium started clapping. I figured they were clapping for the baseball players until I looked over to the other side of the stadium. Filing up on either side of a row was a steady stream of Soldiers in their uniforms. I then realized the clapping was for them and joined in. Pretty soon the whole stadium of fans were on their feet and clapping until each Soldier got to their seat. Wow! I'm definitely not ashamed to admit I had some tears flowing by the end of that and am even tearing up now typing about it. God bless our Soldiers!!
